According to economist Scott Mackey, wireless consumers  pay excessive  state and local taxes for wireless services. The report concludes that taxes and fees on wireless service increased four times faster than taxes on other goods and services in the U.S. between 2003 and 2007.

The report states, “Wireless consumers are subject to a growing number of industry-specific discriminatory taxes andfees on their service. Some states and localities are looking to expand those taxes — many of which originated during a time when the telecommunications industry was characterized by regulated monopolies— even though the wireless marketplace is highly competitive.”
