iPhone App Sales Reach 1 Billion, Baby Shaker Thrown Out with Bath Water

Combined iPhone and iPod Touch sales totaled about 37 million units. The Apple iPhone App Store has reached more than 35,000 applications. Apple app number 1 billion was sold on the App Store, sometime today.

In the meantime, Apple apologized for selling the "Baby Shaker" app and pulled the app from the store. An Apple rep told Information Week:

"This application was deeply offensive and should not have been approved for distribution on the App Store. When we learned of this mistake, the app was removed immediately. We sincerely apologize for this mistake and thank our customers for bringing this to our attention."

The iPhone app showed a drawing of a baby accompanied by audio of a baby crying. The objective of the app was to shake the phone until the baby stopped crying.

Some people found the application offensive because of the dangers of Shaken Baby Syndrome. Apple reportedly dropped the app Wednesday, after complaints from child-abuse groups, including the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome and The Sarah Jane Brain Foundation, which said it planned to picket Apple Stores in 15 cities starting May 3. Others defended the app because it was supposed to be funny...
