AT&T GoPhone Data Rate Change - Per KB Plan Grandfathered

Go Phone Calling PlansThe conjecturatti were getting a little anxious that AT&T GoPhone owners would have to pay an extra monthly fee to access data services when the plan is upgraded on Sunday, April 22.  Those who already are assigned to the GoPhone per KB deal, can rest assured that you don't have upgrade to a more expensive plan.  The new data plans double up data for data plan users, only.

We called support for GoPhone. GoPhone users that currently don't have a data plan and pay the 1-cent per 5KB rate will be able to continue to use their present plans when the new data plans go into effect.

At any time you can change GoPhone plans across current plans, but you can not go back to plans that no longer exist.  For example, say I have a KIC prepaid plan that has not be around for years.  If I upgrade to the AT&T to unlimited voice, text for $50.00 a month along with a data plan, I can change back to the current voice plan at ten-cent voice minutes and 1 cent per 5KB that  but not go back to the KIC ancient plan.

  The GoPhone website states:

Smartphone users must purchase a data package to use data services on eligible plans. Pay–per–use data is not available with Smartphones.

Packages are good for 30 days as long as your account balance is not expired. Standard rates apply if package is not renewed after 30 days. Also, package balance rolls over if renewed before expiration date.

The new GoPhone data plans doubled the amount of data for the price here they are:

  • 1 GB $25
  • 200 MB $15
  • 50 MB $5
All data packages are available on the $50 Unlimited Talk & Text nationwide plan for GoPhone smartphones and the $25 Unlimited Text with 250 minutes nationwide GoPhone plan.

The 1-cent per 5KB on a simple cell phone will pay-as-you-go will not cost much unless if you try to do something with a lot of data, that rate can eat up a lot of dollars.  For example 1,o00KB or 1MB will cost you $2.00 while 5MB will cost $10,00 and 100MB will run up a $20.00 tab and well 1GB would cost you $100.00.  We have a friend who used his GoPhone data to find Starbucks with directions and it cost him $18.00 in data.  That was a very expensive cup of coffee.

The new GoPhone plans don't effect voice minutes, which proves that talk is cheap.
