Windows Phone Update 7.8 - Smartphone Beta Test Not Over

Nokia Lumia

Whoops, the Windows Phone update to 7.8 has been halted due to a glitch reportedly with Live Tiles.

Microsoft has stopped the update until further notice to customers of Vodaphone. According to the Windows Phone update page, the  update is not available in all markets or for all phones.

Here's where it gets even more confusing:

"Windows Phone 7.8 is the official product name we use to describe this release. However, due to a quirk of software development, the actual OS version is identified as 7.10.8858.136. You'll see both of these names on your phone in Settings  > About > More info."

To install an update on Windows Phone 7, you need the Zune software, which is only available for PCs. If you use a Mac, you'll need to borrow a PC to install an update

Microsoft through forum posts is aware of the Live Tile problem and is working on a fix.

Many Windows Phone 7 users were disappointed that they could not update their Windows Phones to Windows 8.

Recently, at Mobile World Congress, Microsoft senior marketing manager Greg Sullivan confirmed that Windows Phone 8 devices will be upgradeable.

The Windows 7.8 update for the Nokia Lumia 900 include:

  • A new start screen with new colors.
  • New theme colors.
  • Bing image of the day lockscreen option.
  • Improved accidental unlocking or touching by mistake.
  • Security enhancements.
  • New Windows Marketplace with optimized download options.
  • New APIs for developers for apps, DRM free music and Bluetooth.
  • A file of a 100MB.

The new Nokia Lumia 920 allows use with almost any object including a power driver, pencil or pear. The Nokia Lumia 900 and 920 were named in the best smartphones of 2012.
