Research In Motion is offering
the BlackBerry Widget Software Development Kit (SDK) to enable third
party application developers to build applications for
BlackBerry smartphones using common web technologies.
With the new BlackBerry Widget SDK, developers can build web-based applications for BlackBerry smartphones with advanced features and functionality, a capability only previously available for BlackBerry applications written in Java(R).
A BlackBerry Widget uses the BlackBerry Browser engine to render an application's user interface using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Developers are able to use existing web content to create BlackBerry Widgets and extend the capabilities of their web applications using BlackBerry Widget APIs.
Using the new BlackBerry Widget APIs, developers can, for example, create seamless interaction between a widget and the BlackBerry email and calendar applications, create widgets with the ability to view or edit files and documents stored on the smartphone, access location-based services or the media player, and more. Developers can also take advantage of RIM's unique push technology, enabling dynamic widgets that can run in the background and provide proactive alerts to users in a timely manner.
GoldSpot Media launched the miApp
platform for developing smartphone apps and ad campaigns. The platform includes ntuitive web-based drag and drop design studio for
creating applications and interactive ad campaigns once. They also offer infrastructure to deploy the apps across multiple apps stores and devices.
They contend that the miApp
dynamic application framework helps publishers simplify app creation by
eliminating mobile device-specific application development and campaign
creation costs.
miApp provides a single web interface that enables publishers to create, update and manage applications and advertising across all mobile devices, without ever needing to write a single line of code.

BlackBerry developer tools for web and Java development and a set
of APIs that enable developers to create a wide variety of
mobile applications that connect BlackBerry smartphone users to the
information they care about. The BlackBerry application platform also incorporates real-time push technology, security and highly efficient data compression and network bandwidth utilization.
Sprint Developer Sandbox will provide access to tools to let developers quickly and easily create location-based services (LBS) applications, messaging applications and more. There are three additional location aggregation providers, Alcatel-Lucent, LOC-AID and Useful Networks, to help developers create new location-based services for Sprint customers.

Google does not like independent developers entering their territory. Infinite SMS a 99 cent iPhone app (developerd by Innerfence) used the Google free text messaging in Gmail Labs so that iPhone owners could send free SMS.The app was hit because text messages for 140 characters are too expensive. It reached the number eight spot in Apple's list of bestselling paid iPhone apps.
Google cut off access to the SMS with this explanation:
"Infinite SMS is a third party app that has been using Google technology to provide free SMS for users, while we were paying for the cost of the text messages. While Google is supportive of third party apps, we've decided we can't support this particular usage of our system at this time. SMS chat is still just an experiment in the early testing stages in Gmail Labs. We're blocking all external XMPP clients from sending SMS; we're not singling out Innerfence."
