The 3G UbiCell, ideal for home or small office, is a small plug-and-play base station that works with users' existing mobile phones to provide secure, in-home cellular service over existing public broadband networks.

Samsung Mobiles 3G UbiCell benefits users by providing higher performance, lower cost coverage in a secure, easy to install solution for use at home. The 3G UbiCell will also allow carriers to provide a cost-effective solution to offload increasing 3G traffic from the Macro network, provide superior signal to address customer's needs for in-home coverage, help retain customers with excellent performance for all family members, and provide for new services such as home phone and incentives through bundled pricing.

The Verizon Hub is a phone center with a video screen, that uses broadband access for many multimedia and wireless features such as text, multimedia messages, photos and news.

The Verizon Hub also has computer-like features such as calendar, video views. It is not a landline phone but uses  VOIP that connects via your broadband internet connection for phone calls to any kind of phone.

The Verizon Hub can contribute to decor because when not used as phone, it acts as digital photo frame (which usually costs around $100). To get the Verizon Hub you must have a Verizon Wireless account already. You get your choice of phone number regardless of area code.

The Verizon Hub has a touchscreen, cordless handset, speaker phone, visual voice mail, caller ID and call waiting. It also features Anonymous Call Rejection, so that it automatically rejects incoming calls marked as anonymous. These features are included in the monthly service plan.

You can access the information on the Verizon Hub from the web at work or anywhere you can connect to the web.

The Verizon Hub has visual voice-mail so that lets you choose which voice mail messages to listen to, You can set it up so that incoming calls will automatically switch to your cell phone--or any other phone.Users can access Verizon Wireless services,such as VZ Navigator (which is included in the service for free), Chaperone and VCast entertainment.

The Verizon Hub connects to your home internet connection either via a ethernet cable or Wi-Fi. A new DSL or cable modem and/or router may be required if you don't already have a router.

AT&T Femtocell 3G MicroCell Shown on Web

attmicrocell.jpgThe AT&T website is showing information for their  3G MicroCell with lots of information but no price ability to order it, yet.

The AT&T MicroCell is made by Cisco and requires a broadband connection to operate. It covers up to 5,000 square feet, allow up to four simultaneous voice or data connections. While the Verizon Extender covers the same area but allows for fewer connections. Like the Verizon Extender it should be placed near a window.  Both units require GPS verification of location.

They say the MicroCell provides "Seamless call hand-over - start calls on your 3G MicroCell and continue uninterrupted even if you leave the building.

Microcelll only works with 3G phones. Owners will have to purchase a "3G MicroCell service plan."

marquee_verzion_networkextender.pngVerizon is now offering its Network Extender on its website for $249. It uses a broadband connection. Network Extender has a range of up to a 5,000 square feet.. Up to three Verizon phones can use the extended network at once.

The Verizon website states with the Network Extender, you can begin a call on the Network Extender network and enjoy uninterrupted transition to the nearest cell tower when leaving the Network Extender coverage area, provided alternative coverage is available.

The Network Extender is compatible with all Verizon Wireless phones as well as some handsets from many of the nation's leading carriers. It has an online management system.

The Network Extender should be placed by a window, or the GPS antenna can be placed outside. GPS is required to make sure the unit is in the U.S. It uses licensed airwaves therefore there is less interference than Wi-Fi. The Network Extender supports both voice and data calls.

verizon.jpgVarious sources have shown internal documents revealing the launch of Verizon's new femtocell product the "Verizon Network Extender" on January 25, for $250.

It has been reportedly made by Samsung the same company that makes Sprint Airwave. When The Network Extender is hooked up to a broadband connection, it creates a CDMA cloud for Verizon coverage in areas where there may not be wireless coverage, but only a broadband connection. 

It creates a 5,000 square foot area of coverage and addresses performance issues due to problems of coverage within buildings. It will work with all Verizon handsets.  Up to three individual calls can be active at a one time. The Network Extender should be placed by a window, or the GPS antenna can be place outside.  GPS is required to make sure the unit is in the U.S. It uses licensed airwaves therefore there is less interference than Wi-Fi. The Network Extender supports both voice and data calls.

It is not clear whether Verizon will charge an additional monthly fee for the service.

Sprint & Samsung Launches Sprint AIRAVE by Samsung August 17

Sprint and Samsung Mobile announced the upcoming nationwide launch of the Sprint AIRAVE by Samsung. the first commercially available femtocell, a mini cell tower that works with any Sprint phone and a broadband Internet connection to provide enhanced in-home wireless coverage. Customers purchasing the AIRAVE can take advantage of unlimited in-home calling with an optional AIRAVE Unlimited Voice plan, starting  August 17.

With the AIRAVE, Sprint customers can:

  • Take advantage of enhanced coverage without having to purchase a new phone.
  • Talk all they want when subscribed to the optional unlimited AIRAVE calling plan. With the plan, unlimited incoming and outgoing calls and nationwide long distance are included when using the AIRAVE.
  • Use their existing Sprint phone, with the option to upgrade to the latest phones at any time. All Sprint phones are compatible with the AIRAVE.*
  • Easily install the device using their existing broadband Internet connection and AC power outlet. The AIRAVE is ready to use straight out of the box, with no configuration changes required.
  • Take their call with them. Calls initiated on the AIRAVE will transfer automatically to the Nationwide Sprint Network when leaving the AIRAVE coverage area.

AT&T Mobility to Sell Femtocells

According to RCR Wireless News,   a report from research and banking firm ThinkPanmure revealed that AT&T Mobility plans to sell up to 7 million femtocells from ip.access Ltd., a  femtocell vendor in Cambridge, England.

ThinkPanmure, notes that  AT&T signed a contract with the firm and will sell the devices for about $100 each.

65-69% Drop/Loose Cell Calls Due 2 Poor Signals in Home or Car

zboost.gifWi-Ex, the leading provider of consumer cell phone signal boosters, announced today at the Consumer Electronics Show the results of its zBoost Car Survey which reveled that 65 percent of consumers who use their cell phone in their car have missed and/or dropped calls due to poor signal in their cars.

The survey finding demonstrates that consumers experience similar cell phone issues both at home and on the go. The zBoost Cell Phone Signal Survey conducted in 2007 found that 69 percent of cell phone owners who make cell phone calls at home have missed or dropped cell phone calls due to poor signal reception or dead zones in their home.

Motorola Testing Femtocells

motorolalogo.jpgMotorola is testing 3G femtocells in Europe. Femtocells are indoor devices that allow cellular calls to be routed via a broadband connection to handsets indoors. Femtocells are expected to improve indoor reception and make In-home calling costs cheaper for 3G users who usually have problems getting signals in their homes.

Femtocells enable a significantly lower cost of delivery for wireless traffic, in comparison to the macrocell network. Consumers will also benefit from consolidated billing.
