Jitterbug Phones Recalled by CPSC: Call Samsung for Update Now

jitterbugcellphone.jpgThe Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled Jitterbug phones made by Samsung. The main reason is that when the recalled Jitterbug phones are in a no-service area and display an “out of range, try again later” message and could fail to connect to emergency 911.

Whew that’s bad because Jitterbug phones are marketed to seniors who may need emergency services whether they are in or out of range.

This recall involves “Jitterbug” cell phones model numbers SPH-a110 and SPH-a120 with standard key pads and version BB14 software.

Jitterbug cell phones were sold directly to consumers through targeted national advertisements and publications, electronics and drug stores nationwide, and on the Web at www.jitterbug.com from March 2008 through May 2009 for about $150.

Samsung and Jitterbug are directly contacting consumers to schedule a free software upgrade. Consumers should call Samsung if they have not already been contacted.

Consumer Contact: For additional information, contact Samsung toll-free at (866) 304-4980 between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. CT Monday through Friday, and on Saturday between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. CT, or visit the firm’s Web site at www.samsung.com.

Icell phone battery.jpgf you have ever had a cell phone battery die on you, you know it could cost as much as new phone.  Replacement batteries generally cost $40 and can be hard to find in stock.

In fact, Jay Leno on the Tonight commented that when he went to a Sprint store, his phone was a two years old and they didn't stock the battery.

Starting Monday, U.S. Cellular will launch an Battery Swap program, where customers can come into any store and change out a dead or dying battery for a fully-charged one, for free. U.S. Cellular is the only wireless company to offer this service.

Consumers who are watching their spending closely can use the Battery Swap program to extend the life of their phone without having to purchase a new battery, which generally costs about $40. U.S. Cellular phones that have been purchased in the last 18 months are eligible for the program.

LG Incite Recalled from Best Buy Re-Launch Monday

lg_incite_silver_l.gifMobility today has found an internal document explaining why  the LG Incite smartphone has been reaclled from Best Buy. Mmmn the recall may be the reason why the LG Incite has been out-of-stock for the past few weeks at the AT&T Online store.

The document says:

"All the AT&T LG Incite CT810 units currently in store are being re-launched  due to a software issue all LG Incite sales must top immediately.

Handset Issue. Customers who have purchased the LG Incite have had errors when attempting to send a SMS message in some locations.  Customers with this issue see a "Your text message cannot be sent" message.

Solution. LG has corrected the setting in the device and has placed blue dots on the saleable product cartons and on the battery compartments."

Stores were advised to pull all boxes without a blue dot. New re-flashed LG incites will be available January 12. If you bought a LG Incite at Best Buy within the last 30 days you return it to Best Buy, otherwise you have to contact AT&T.  Mobility Today does not note where the document came from.

We think the LG Incite has been popular because AT&T is selling the LG Incite for $99 after a rebate with a contract. When you add the Wireless and Mobile News'  $50 Off on AT&T phones or accessories with a plan "online coupon-link"  that would bring the price of the LG Incite down to $50 much cheaper than most other full-featured smartphones.

This is the second Windows smartphone we recall that has been recalled the first was the Sony Xperia X1 pulled from Sony Style stores in late November/early December.
sonyXperia.jpgAccording to CNET Asia the decision have HTC make their next Xperia is due to the reported dissatisfaction of Sony Ericsson over the design of Xperia X1.

While, the Taiwanese news site DigiTimes reports that, according to the Chinese-language Commercial Times paper, Sony Ericsson is set to have its rhe Xperia X2 manufactured by the Taiwanese ODM expert Mobinnova .

Let's see what could be the problem with HTC?  Delays in delivery.  Cracks in the case and problems that caused  Sony Style Stores to recall the Xperia X1 in the United States. The Sony Xperia sells for $799.

Sony Xperia X1 Shortage Due to Lack of Materials or Recall?

SonyXperiaRecall2.jpgThe Sony Xperia X1 smartphone will be very hard to find under trees this holiday season because there is shortage, most likely due to a recall.

Unlocked Windows Mobile Xperia X1 phones with iPhone-like features (Wi-Fi touchscreen, GPS) as well as video capture, 3.2 megapixel camera and keyboard sold-out of some Sony Style Stores the last week in November.

Following the lead of the San Jose Mercury News reporter, who called Wal-Mart stores to scoop the Wal-Marting of iPhones, Wireless and Mobile News called several Sony Style stores.

The Xperia X1 smartphones were received just before Black Friday and sold-out shortly after that, one store associate told us. Their shipment of Xperia X1 were all gone by Black Friday noted another employee at another Sony store.  Fifty Xperia X1 phones sold-out quickly, in the Garden City Sony Style Store in New York, also around Black Friday. While the New York City Sony Style store concierge said they didn't have any.

Here's where the story gets interesting, at two stores, we called, the concierges stated that the Xperia X1 were delivered but they were sent back. One concierge said that they had a call-back. Neither knew the reasons why. Another store we called had the best details. The concierge stated that there was a recall due to an operating system software issue and that there were problems of compatibility with U.S. carriers (T-Mobile and AT&T). The store received an email in the morning and was not allowed to sell the Sony Xperia X1 at all.

Today there were reports of shortages and later ship dates of the Sony Xperia X1 on the Internet.

Cell Phone Lithium Batteries Limited on Airplanes

Beginning  January 1,  airline passengers will no longer be allowed to pack loose lithium batteries in checked luggage, under new transportation laws aimed at reducing the risk of battery fires.

Passengers are permitted to  carry up to two spare extended-life rechargeable lithium batteries in carry-on bags as long as they are in their original packaging or in a plastic zipper bag, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.

Checked bags can contain batteries already installed in gadgets such as cell phones, cameras or laptop computers, according to the DOT.

Lithium batteries are considered hazardous materials because they can overheat and ignite in certain conditions. Safety testing conducted by the FAA found that current aircraft cargo fire suppression system would not be capable of suppressing a fire if a shipment of non-rechargeable lithium batteries were ignited in flight.
