Thumbnail image for blackberrythunderstorm.jpgThe next BlackBerry Storm operating systme, OS 5.0.0.140 has been leaked onto the Internet and is expected to come installed on the new BlackBerry Storm 2.  If you have a Verizon BlackBerry Storm, Verizon eventually releases updates after vigorous testing. The last update BlackBerry Storm Update OS 4.7.0.148 received excellent reviews and improved the BlackBerry Storm greatly.

The OS 5.0.0.140 update version was discovered on a Chinese website. BlackBerry Storm owners should be warned that you may void your warranty by using the unauthorized update.

The update supposedly is faster, has a battery meter, new screen transitions, browser tabs, recent activity log,  There have been reports that the not all current BlackBerry software with work with this updated operating system. The update has problems with IM, social networking sites, Weatherbug, Vlingo and backwards screen orientation.  Other reported problems include the history in the browser does not work, alarm does not work properly, and BlackBerry App World doesn't work.

Some forum members reported that they were able to get the OS 5.0.0.140  to work on their BlackBerry Storms while this post sums it up nicely, "I was totally psyched to try this out but after browsing through hundreds of horror stories, I'm gonna sit this one out. "

It appears that this release was pirated from somewhere without testing, so some brave (or poor) BlackBerry Storm buccaneers, gave it try out and then were forced to abandon ship. This "stormy" update could be called a tropical storm or a full-blow hurricane of mishaps.

Nielsen Mobile reports that mobile media was slightly more popular with Democrats than Republicans, as of Q2 2008.

  • Overall, 62% of Democrats are data users who use one or more data service on their mobile phone (compared to 55% of Republicans)
  • Democrats are more likely than Republicans to use text messaging (53 percent compared to 46 percent)
  •  Democrats are more likely to use picture messaging and MMS (27 percent compared to 21 percent)
  •  Democrats are more likely to use mobile Internet, as well (17 percent compared to 13 percent)

Though the differences may not seem great, these variations indicate that advertising across mobile channels tends to be more efficient at reaching Democrats than Republicans.

Obama campaign is using mobile marketing. Last month the campaign sent a text message to 2.9 million mobile phones announcing Joe Biden as Senator Obama's pick for vice president, as estimated by Nielsen Mobile. Additionally, the Obama campaign has a full mobile website containing news, videos and ringtone and wallpaper downloads.

Meanwhile, the McCain campaign has not been as active in mobile media, but that may make sense. Perhaps the McCain campaign knows that, in 2008, mobile is a more effective channel for reaching Democrats than Republicans.

Note the Pew Center has shown a landline basis in polling.

VeriSign announced another record-breaking quarter for mobile messaging, based on the latest quarterly index of mobile messaging statistics compiled by VeriSign’s Messaging and Mobile Media division.

Through June 30, 2008, VeriSign’s combined mobile messaging networks delivered 95.4 billion Inter-carrier Short Message Service (ICSMS) messages in the calendar year, eclipsing the previous record for text messages in the first half of any year. VeriSign’s network also set a single-day record by enabling 648 million texts over a 24-hour period and a one-hour record of 42 million messages.

All told, VeriSign’s combined mobile messaging networks enabled more than 52 billion messages in Q2 2008, up more than 20 percent from the previous quarter. VeriSign facilitated an average of approximately 572 million messages per day in Q2 2008, compared to approximately 476 million messages per day in Q1 2008 and approximately 230 million messages per day in Q2 2007.

Sign Language on Cellphones, Thanks to U of Washington

A group at the University of Washington has developed software that deaf and hard-of-hearing Americans to use sign language over a mobile phone. UW engineers had phones working together this spring, and recently received a National Science Foundation grant for a 20-person field project that will begin next year in Seattle.

This is the first time two-way real-time video communication has been demonstrated over cell phones in the United States. Since posting a video of the working prototype on YouTube, deaf people around the country have been writing on a daily basis.

For mobile communication, deaf people now communicate by cell phone using text messages. “But the point is you want to be able to communicate in your native language,” said principal investigator Eve Riskin, a UW professor of electrical engineering. “For deaf people that’s American Sign Language.”

Subscribers in North America generated the highest monthly ARPU from mobile data services worldwide, at US$8.90 in 2Q 2007. Subscribers in Western Europe generate on average only US$7 per month.

Strong uptake of all-you-can-eat data packages, a near three-fold increase in 3G subscriptions year-on-year and rapid growth in SMS traffic in North America were the main reasons for the 43% rise in data ARPU in the region in 2Q 2007 compared with 2Q 2006.
