Telegent Systems and In-Stat reported a worldwide user base of 54 million mobile TV consumers in 2009 and predicts 6x growth to 300 million users by 2013 .

"The adoption of analog mobile TV handsets has been driven by the most powerful force in the mobile industry: consumers," said Frank Dickson, vice president of research at In-Stat. "Analog mobile TV has two very fundamental and compelling advantages - cost and availability. The infrastructure is already in place, there are no new standards that need to be enacted and the service is free to consumers - a very powerful combination."

How often is often?

  •  More than half of free-to-air analog mobile TV consumers surveyed reported watching mobile TV at least three times a week, with 20% of respondents in all regions watching daily. In some geographies, 40% or more watched daily.
  • Approximately two-thirds of respondents reported viewing mobile TV for thirty minutes or more on the days that they watched TV, dispelling the notion that it will ultimately be a vehicle for "TV snacking" when away from home.
  •  While news and sports were popular among mobile TV viewers, most favored a mix of program types.
  •  Popular use cases for watching mobile TV included while in transit, while at home and during breaks at work. In Indonesia, where traffic is notoriously bad, the "in-transit" use case predominated.mobiletvworldmarket.jpg

Following the switchover traditional and mobile TV broadcasters and cellular operators in many regions will launch mobile TV services that are forecast to attract over 500 million viewers by 2013.

There's an important distinction to draw between content streamed to mobile handsets over cellular networks, and free-to-air broadcasting to mobile devices equipped with mobile TV tuners.

"Mobile TV users have yet to value the medium properly because it has not been validated as an independent product and service," says senior analyst Jeff Orr. "It has been primarily offered at the end of a long list of more preferred cellular services. However, Mobile TV will soon be positioned in a more proper role as an extension of traditional broadcast TV services."

The increasing availability of mobile handsets capable of receiving free-to-air analogue and digital terrestrial TV signals will adversely impact the prospects for dedicated mobile broadcast TV networks, according to a new report from Juniper Research.

While the report says that more than 330m mobile users worldwide will own broadcast TV-enabled handsets by 2013, less than 14% will opt for mobile pay TV services. Although mobile broadcast TV will generate global annual end-user revenues of $2.7 billion by 2013, this level is markedly lower than previously forecast.

According to report author Dr Windsor Holden, "The development of terrestrial TV-capable receivers with comparatively low power consumption, and the availability of these receivers in mass market handsets, throws into question the business case for the deployment of a dedicated network in many markets."

Other findings from the report include:

-- In terms of end-user revenues, the US will be the largest single market for mobile broadcast TV services in 2013, followed by South Korea and China.
-- MediaFLO services are likely to be deployed in parts of Asia and in the UK by the end of 2010.
-- Adoption levels for streamed TV packages are higher than previously envisaged, reflecting the reduction in anticipated deployment of dedicated mobile broadcast TV networks.
