Qualcomm Up and Down

Thumbnail image for art97/qualcommlogo.jpgQualcomm Inc. reported that its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings nearly doubled because of the demand for chips that power high-end cell phones,.

Unfortunately, Qualcomm cut its annual forecast because a patent dispute with Nokia Oyj may reduce technology licensing sales. Revenues were $8.87 billion, up 18 percent year-over-year and net income was $3.41 billion, up 21 percent year-over-year.

T-Mobile Reports Lots of Customers, ARPU and Profits

t-mobilelogo.jpgAt the end of the quarter, T-Mobile reported it had almost 28 million customers, adding 857,000 net new customers during the quarter. T-Mobile USA also reported ARPU of $53 in the quarter, up from $52 in the third quarter of 2006.

T-Mobile USA also reported:

  • $1.41 billion in Operating Income Before Depreciation and Amortization (OIBDA) in the third quarter of 2007, up 15.1% from the third quarter of 2006.
  • Contract customer churn 2.0% in the third quarter, down from 2.3% in the third quarter of 2006.
  • T-Mobile announced the proposed acquisition of SunCom Wireless in the quarter, expanding coverage to 98 of the top 100 markets in the U.S. (up by 11)

Sprints 3Q Profits Down Due to Wireless Flight

sprintlogo.jpgSprint Nextel, announced that its profits were down due to lower contributions from its wireless business. The company reported a net decline of 60,000 total wireless subscribers in the third quarter.

“Our third quarter results reflect mixed performance as we address competitive market conditions and manage through credit market impacts on a portion of our customer base,” said Paul Saleh, acting CEO and chief financial officer of Sprint Nextel.
