verizon.jpgVerizon Wireless announced the deployment of 19,500 internationally enabled BlackBerry 8830 World Edition Smartphones to more than 56 Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) offices worldwide. The devices are part of the agency’s Sensitive But Unclassified (SBU) Mobility Program and provide FBI agents with mobile access to federal law enforcement information that was previously inaccessible from handheld wireless devices.

Verizon Wireless also conducted in-person training with agents, transferred phone book contacts directly to the new devices, and provided complete equipment set up that included fully-charged batteries, SIM card activation, and unit assembly to ensure a smooth transition from the FBI’s previous wireless devices to the new BlackBerry 8830 World Edition smartphones. All deployed devices feature asset tagging and tracking capability, ensuring that lost or stolen devices are easily recovered and the information on those devices remains secure. In addition, each field office can access account information online to manage and maintain the devices quickly and easily.

There have been reports that Nokia reps have been discussing a new touchscreen Nokia phone, code named “Tube.”
It is expected to launch in the second half of 2008 and include support for Java, and ability to upload photos using the Symbian S60 operation System.

In addition, Microsoft announced Windows Mobile 6.1, an update for its Windows Mobile software that includes new time-saving features, easier phone navigation and management, and increased security safeguards.

mirasol.jpgQualcomm MEMS Technologies, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated announced that Inventec Corporation has chosen Qualcomm’s MEMS-based mirasol displays for upcoming portable devices.

Inventec will incorporate mirasol displays into high-end smart handheld devices for the worldwide markets, including Europe and North America. The mirasol display will act as a secondary viewing area as a means to offload power needs from the main display. The design and functionality of the smartphone device will be revealed at a later date.

Qualcomm’s mirasol displays are based on a reflective technology called interferometric modulation (IMOD), a phenomenon that mimics the mechanisms that naturally create vibrant colors in a butterfly’s wings. Based on this reflective technology, mirasol displays offer low power consumption and superior viewability, even in brightly lit areas.

Product launch dates and retail channels will be announced at a later date.

Palm has expanded its use of Nuance Mobile speech solutions to deliver hands-free voice control capabilities to its broad portfolio of mobile devices.

Palm has selected Nuance VSuite to enable hands-free, one-step access to mobile applications and content. VSuite offers a speech-based user interface for hands-free, eyes-free access to smartphone features. In addition to being included on the Centro from AT&T, VSuite is provided on the Treo 755p from Verizon Wireless. VSuite is also supported on all Palm OS based Palm Treo smartphones.

Today at CTIA in Las Vegas, Motorola is expanding its mobile device portfolio in the US with the introduction of new smartphones that deliver must-have features and the style consumers’ desire. MOTO Q gets extended reach with the addition of the Q9c at Verizon Wireless, and Alltel and US Cellular will offer the QWERTY device in two color options, MOTO Q9 licorices and MOTO Q9c lime.

New to AdMob’s February Mobile Metrics Report were percentages of Smartphone traffic worldwide. The statistics culminated in data pulled from the following company’s Smartphones: RIM, Nokia, Palm, Apple, HTC,HP, MITAC, Samsung, T-Mobile, Motorola and others. According to AdMob’s data:

  • RIM’s BlackBerry 8100 Smartphone has the greatest percentage of worldwide traffic with 34% of Smartphone traffic share.
  • Nokia’s Smartphones followed in second with 29% share of the traffic and Motorola’s Smartphones came in last with 1% traffic share.
  • In the United States, iPhone traffic flattened slightly during the month of February, consistent with the theory that people use new devices a great deal in January, only to have traffic slow down in the following months.

Oracle announced new mobile interoperability with Nokia devices and technology, as a result of the ongoing cooperation and co-development between the two companies. Oracle has validated the Nokia Intellisync Device Management solution working with Oracle’s Siebel CRM platform, Oracle(R) Database Lite is now available on Symbian Version 9/S60 Version 3 enabling enterprises to mobilize their applications using Nokia devices and Siebel Wireless is now available on the Nokia E90 Communicator, an Eseries device designed for enterprise users.

With a large 2.8” screen, 16 gigabytes of internal memory, GPS, 5 MP camera, and support for high-quality videos in a wide range of formats.

The Nokia N96 multimedia computer is expected to begin shipping in the third quarter of 2008 with an estimated sales price of approximately $800 before subsidies or taxes.

The photogenic grandaughter of LG Prada named the LG Viewty, will be coming to a carrier in the near future and it's looking pretty good as well as deserving recognition for handwriting recogntion better than a Palm.  I was able to try the phone at CES today with a resistve touchscreen.  Even though I wasn't using a stylus, just the end of pen, I was able to write faster than on a iPhone. The screen size is slightly smaller than an iPhone at 240 x 400 pixels that measures 3 inches.

It's called the Viewty because it has a 5 megapixel camera with a stabilizer which can shoot 120fps video .  It also features direct uploading to YouTube and full Internet browsing.  It sold 310,000 in its first 5 weeks in Europe. There is no word yet when and if it will be available in the States.

Several news sources including PCMag reported that that iRiver is planning to release a GSM touchscreen phone with a 3 inch 480 x 272 touchscreen, 4GB of flash storage, Linux-based software, Rhapsody and other media support, and 2 megapixel camera with video.

Their PR rep said that the phone will be more affordable than the iPhone.

The P527 was awarded the CES Innovation Design and Engineering award for 2008. The global GPS phone has Travelog and Location Courier features.
