2011 is the first year, in the four years of the Wireless and Mobile News' Top Ten Best Coolest Hottest Smartphones Review of Reviews list that an iPhone does not top the list. It is also the first year that BlackBerry has no entries at all.

In 2008, there was a three-way tie for first place the BlackBerry Storm, T-Mobile G1 (Android) and iPhone 3G. In 2009, the iPhone came in first place, while there was three-way tie for third place between the Droid, Palm Pre and BlackBerry Bold.

In 2010, there was a tie for first place between the iPhone 4 and the Droid X with the Samsung Galaxy S Epic 4G in second place.  The Windows Phone operating system appeared in the list for the first time. Samsung was the top smartphone maker, followed by HTC, Motorola, Apple, RIM (BlackBerry) and LG. Android was the dominant operating system.

The Wireless and Mobile News' Top Ten Best Coolest Hottest Smartphones 2011 Review of Reviews list shows some trends:

  • Dominance by Samsung due to faster dual-core processors and ginormous Super AMOLED touchscreen.
  • Many of winners are powered by a dual-core processor.
  • A majority of the winners have fast 4G, LTE or WiMAX data connections.
The list is distilled from analysis of all the major review sources on the web and in print.  The winners of each list are rated and averaged.  This methodology gives Review of Reviews' readers a consensus.  Since each model may be a little different according to the carrier, each model stands alone.
