Palm Pre and Palm Pixi webOS 1.4.5.1 Update Soon 7/7?

Thumbnail image for webOS2_270x404.jpgA new update for for Palm Pre and Palm Pixi  webOS 1.4.5.1, is expected to be pushed out at Sprint on Wednesday with Verizon following.

Several sources reported that the update would be coming out July 7.  We called our local Sprint store and they were not aware of any update.  The Sprint rep suggested that users check for updates on their Palm Pre or Palm Pixi phone (instructions follow.)

The webOS
1.4.5.1 Fixes the following glitches on the Palm Pre and Palm Pixi smartphones from Sprint.

  • Web: Podcasts
    now download correctly. 
  • Web: text entry can now be
    entered correctly.
  • Email: Sprint branded default
    email signature correctly branded .
  • Power consumption /
    battery optimization.
  • Videos: A user can now send a
    video via multimedia messaging from the Video application.[
  • Video:
    the video trim feature now works to send in a message. 
  • Sprint
    TV: Upgrade to V 3.5.4 
  • Sprint TV: Enhanced Parental
    controls.
     

Palm has not issued an official changelog for this version, but when they do it will appear here.

  1. Manual update--check yourself to see if an update is
    available

    • You can also check for system updates manually at any
      time by opening Updates .

    • If an update is available, you can download it
      immediately
      (or you can wait for it to download in the background at a later
      time). You are notified when the update is ready to be installed.
      The update screen contains a link to the Palm Support website, where
      you can get information on the contents of the update.

    • There is no minimum battery threshold for manually
      initiating
      an update download.

There are few details you should know before you perform the  Over- the- Air update on
your Palm Pre or Palm Pixi.  You will not be able to use your Palm Pre
or Palm Pixi during the installation of the update. Here's how to install the webOS
update on your Palm Pre or Palm Pixi.

How to Download the Update
OTA:

The
update may be pushed to you or you can get it via the. updates app on
the Palm Pre to download it immediately, (It will take less time to
download, if you are connected to Wi-Fi.)

For the OTA
(Over-the-Air) update, you will get an alert stating:

You are also given the option to download the update
now via the "Download Now" button.

For an automatic "Over the Air"
background update, the Palm Pre will wait until you are
connected to a Wi-Fi connection, if you don't connect to Wi-Fi within
two days, it will download the update via the 3G data network.

If
the download process is interrupted for any reason, the process will
automatically reconnect and complete. Updates
are not downloaded when you have a low-speed data connection or a
roaming connection, unless you have enabled data roaming.

Install
the Update

Important note: your battery has be charged to at
least 30% and do not install the update if you are on a phone call.

You can however, use your phone while the update downloads.

After
the update is downloaded you have to install it.

Installation
can take up to fifteen minutes to complete. While a system update is
being installed, you cannot use any part of your phone, and all
wireless services are disabled.
They warn, do not remove your battery
while an update is being installed
because you could damage the
phone. The update shouldn't effect your data (contacts, emails, calendar
etc.) in any way.
