HTC ThunderBolt Update Reset: What to Do if You Have Ugrade Problems

HTC ThunderBolt Updte GingerbreadYesterday, we learned that Verizon Wireless had pulled the update for the HTC ThunderBolt to Android 2.3 Gingerbread. A Verizon spokesman told us that HTC and Verizon were working on the reported glitches and there would be a new update out soon.  Those who  downloaded the update may need to remove the effects of the update.

Verizon usually sends out updates in a small batch first and then expands the release over time.  There does not appear to be many adversely affected.

So what do you do in the meantime if you were one of the few who downloaded the update for the HTC ThunderBolt and are experiencing glitches?

We contacted Verizon Wireless' spokesman Ken Muche who emailed the following statement:

"If a customer has already downloaded the update there is no action they need to take. Verizon Wireless and HTC anticipate the update being available soon. Customers will be notified directly on their devices when it is ready for download."

In general, when you experience glitches you have few options:

  • If your HTC ThunderBolt is not working properly, you can contact Verizon or HTC support for help.
  • A tried and true trick with any Android problem is to pull the battery, and microSD card.  Put the battery only  back onlywait a while and then restart the phone.  Power down the phone if it works then you can open it up to return the micorSD card.
  • HTC Reps have told HTC Forum ThunderBolt owners to perform a factory reset.  This is something you only do as a last resort.

A Factory reset  will permanently delete all your data and customized settings, and will remove any applications you’ve downloaded and installed. Be sure to back up any data and files you want to keep before you do a factory reset.

According the HTC ThunderBolt manual:

A factory reset (also called a hard reset) returns your phone to the state it was in before the first time you turned it on. Factory reset will not erase the data and files that are on the storage card.

You can do a factory reset from menus  this way;

  • Press HOME > MENU, and then tap Settings.
  • Tap SD & phone storage > Factory data reset.
  • On the Factory data reset screen, tap Reset phone, and then tap Erase everything.

Performing a factory reset using phone buttons

  • With the phone turned off, press and hold the VOLUME DOWN button, and then press-hold the POWER button.
  • Wait for the screen with the three Android images to appear, and then release the VOLUME DOWN button.
  • Press VOLUME DOWN to select FACTORY RESET, and then press the POWER button.

After the factory reset you will have to update your software to the latest version of Android before the update.

The list of features in the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update are impressive, with the addition of download manager, active app management, shortcuts, one-touch copy/paste, widgets, icons, app groups, updated calendar options, camera geotagging, improved email synching, and camera auto-focus improvements.  Read Gingerbread tips.
