Today must be update day because there is yet another Android update on the horizon, but this time it is not the Samsung Galaxy S update to Android 2.2 Froyo.  It's a Sony Xperia X10 update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

You may or may not get excited about the planned updates for the Sony Xperia X10 since it will only be for the generic trade versions at first.  The Sony Xperia X10 on AT&T has added on AT&T features to brand it.

For a while, Sony reported that it would not update the Sony Xperia X10 past Android 2.1 Éclair.

Sony listened to customers' requests and plans to bring an upgrade to Android Gingerbread for the Xperia X10 to generic trade kits the end of Q2/early Q3 this year.  The AT&T Sony Xperia X10 received an update to Android 2.1 Eclair in October.

Due to the resources available, Sony will only
focus on delivering generic trade versions of the software.  Sony will
provide more information on operator-branded versionx at a later stage.

The way the update will work is that some Sony-branded UI features
will be replaced by pure Google features, such as the camera, Mediascape
and Moxier.  DRM-protected content will be lost with the update.  Sony
Ericsson Backup and Restore will not be restored.

The upgrade will only be available through PC-based upgrade clients, and once you update, you can't go back to Android 2.1.
